AN INSIDER DIVULGED: Bears QB Offers Heartfelt Reply to Stroud Comparison That Will Keep a Scar On Texans…

Bears QB Caleb Williams Gives Brief Answer to C.J. Stroud Comparison

The Chicago Bears selected quarterback Caleb Williams to lead a major team turnaround, similar to how C.J. Stroud led the Houston Texans last season.

Williams saw Stroud, his former peer from Ohio State, make a significant impact in the NFL in 2023. Stroud, chosen second overall in the draft, earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and impressed with a standout performance in the playoffs, throwing for 274 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Cleveland Browns’ top defense.

During ESPN’s “First Take” on August 2, host Stephen A. Smith questioned whether Williams could match Stroud’s rookie success. “Is it wrong to think that what C.J. Stroud did last year in Houston could be replicated here this year?” Smith asked.

Williams simply replied, “No,” with a smile.

Comparing the Bears and Texans

The Bears and Texans have similar circumstances going into their respective seasons. Houston had two top-10 picks in the 2023 draft (2nd and 3rd), while Chicago had two top-10 picks this year (1st and 9th). The Texans added rookie receiver Tank Dell, and the Bears have brought in Rome Odunze.

Chicago, finishing 3-14 in 2022, and Houston, with a 3-13-1 record, both had poor seasons before significant changes. The Texans improved dramatically last season with a 10-7 record, whereas the Bears finished 7-10 and aim to close the gap in a competitive NFC North. Chicago has bolstered their roster with Odunze, Pro Bowler Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, and tight end Cole Kmet, and they aim to become a top offensive team.

Williams was enthusiastic about Stroud’s rookie year, noting, “It was exciting. It’s rare to see someone come in and have such an explosive offense. We have the talent to do it, so we’re just preparing for those moments.”

Williams Progressing with Bears’ Offense

Williams is making strides during training camp and developing chemistry with his teammates. ESPN’s Dan Graziano observed that Williams and rookie receiver Rome Odunze have a strong connection, with Odunze making impressive catches in drills.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus noted that Williams, who will turn 23 in November, is improving his understanding of the offense. Eberflus said, “[Williams is] refining his skills and learning how different receivers run their routes.”

The Bears will play their second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on August 10.
