49ers Contract: GM Has Made a choice Between Aiyuk and Samuel, Look Who is Coming Onboard…

The ongoing contract dispute between the San Francisco 49ers and star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has reached a critical point, and a resolution appears distant. Former general manager and NFL analyst Michael Lombardi has shed light on the additional challenges facing the team, particularly regarding another key player, Deebo Samuel.

According to Lombardi, the 49ers’ situation is complicated by the fact that 2024 could potentially be Samuel’s final season with the team, as his contract includes an option for an out after this year. This adds another layer of difficulty to the contract negotiations, as the 49ers may be forced to choose between extending Samuel or securing a new deal for Aiyuk.

Lombardi suggests that the 49ers will likely employ their leverage in this situation. They may not be able to offer both Aiyuk and Samuel high-value contracts. Instead, the team might present Aiyuk with an ultimatum: accept the current offer or be prepared to see Samuel as the long-term solution. This strategy could lead to Aiyuk’s departure but would allow the 49ers to better manage their finances, particularly in light of potential future expenses.

Lombardi also touched on the financial implications for quarterback Brock Purdy, whose value Lombardi believes might have been underestimated. A recent article by ESPN’s Bill Barnwell estimated that Purdy could command a salary as high as $65 million per season, adding pressure to the 49ers’ financial planning.

Lombardi expressed frustration with the ongoing focus on Aiyuk’s situation, stating, “I’m so tired of talking about this guy. We treat him like he’s Randy Moss. He had a good year, but he’s just a good player.” Lombardi also indicated that the current holdout by Aiyuk is detrimental to the 49ers, suggesting that the team should shift their focus to preparing for the upcoming 2024 season rather than getting bogged down in contract disputes.
