The Miami Dolphins have secured a significant contract extension with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, marking a major commitment to their star player. Tagovailoa, who had previously been selected as the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft from the University of Alabama, has agreed to a new four-year deal worth $212.4 million. This new contract, confirmed by Tagovailoa through his social media on Friday, sets his annual average salary at slightly over $53 million.
This lucrative deal places Tagovailoa as the third highest-paid quarterback in the NFL at present. He is currently surpassed only by Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence, both of whom earn $55 million annually. Tagovailoa’s impressive earnings reflect his significant impact on the field and the Dolphins’ commitment to his future.
Since joining the Dolphins, Tagovailoa has shown remarkable growth. Under the guidance of head coach Mike McDaniel, he has evolved into one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. Over his first four seasons, Tagovailoa has started 52 games. His performance in 2023 was particularly noteworthy; he was selected for the Pro Bowl after an outstanding season where he completed 388 of 560 passes, which represents a completion rate of 69.3%. His impressive stats include a league-leading 4,624 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
The Dolphins had a strong regular season, finishing with an 11-6 record and securing a spot in the playoffs.
