FINALLY: Coach Mario Cristobal Clears The Air On Why They Have Made Such Sad Conclusions About Allen and Fletcher…

Quarterback Cam Ward is thrilled about running back Damien Martinez joining the Miami Hurricanes. Ward, who transferred from Washington State to Miami, knows Martinez from their time in the Pac-12. Martinez, previously at Oregon State, accumulated 2,167 yards and 16 touchdowns on 355 carries over two seasons, averaging 6.1 yards per carry.

Last season alone, he ran for 1,185 yards and nine touchdowns. “Damien’s the real deal,” Ward said, praising Martinez’s lateral movement, field vision, and catching ability. Martinez is expected to lead Miami’s backfield, which includes returning sophomores Mark Fletcher Jr. and Ajay Allen, who together had 875 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

While Fletcher and Allen missed spring practice, Coach Mario Cristobal indicated they are on track for the season. Additionally, redshirt freshman Chris Johnson and new recruits Chris Wheatley-Humphrey and Jordan Lyle are set to contribute.

Francisco Mauigoa, a top ACC linebacker for Miami, previously played quarterback in high school, a perspective he believes enhances his defensive skills. Leading the Hurricanes with 18 tackles for loss and tying for most sacks last season, Mauigoa says this experience helps him understand the impact of hits on quarterbacks. However, he no longer feels sympathy for them.

Coach Cristobal emphasized the strategic use of the transfer portal to build a balanced roster, combining experienced players with talented freshmen. This mix, he believes, enhances team performance and development, promising a strong future for Miami football.
