Following the opening day of fall camp, Florida State running back Lawrance Toafili addressed the media, sharing his insights on the 2024 Seminoles and his role as a leader in the backfield.
Toafili, a redshirt senior, discussed his excitement for his final preseason with the Seminoles, acknowledging that while the experience feels different as his last, he remains enthusiastic about the opportunity to hit the field.
Reflecting on Indiana transfer Jaylin Lucas, Toafili described him as an “explosive” and versatile player, noting his ability to excel both in open spaces and when catching passes. Toafili praised Lucas for adding a valuable skill set to the offense, enhancing the overall versatility of the running back group, which includes both powerful and agile backs.
With the departure of Trey Benson to the NFL Draft, Toafili sees his role as crucial in guiding the younger players. He emphasized his commitment to leading by example and helping the team stay on course. As the veteran in the group, Toafili feels responsible for motivating his teammates and driving the unit forward.
Toafili has also physically prepared for his final season by adding weight, now at 196 pounds, which he believes will help him handle a heavier workload and increase his confidence on the field. He feels this added bulk will benefit his performance and his interactions with opposing players.
Despite significant roster changes, including the loss of talent and the arrival of new players, Toafili noted the strong camaraderie in the locker room. He highlighted the team’s quick bonding and close-knit atmosphere, which he believes will contribute positively to their performance. Toafili is optimistic that the team’s unity and mutual support will provide them with an additional edge this season.
For Florida State to establish a strong running game in 2024, Toafili and his fellow running backs will need to deliver significant contributions. The team’s success on the ground will be pivotal in shaping their identity for the upcoming season.
