BREAKING NEWS: 49ers GM, I Can’t Believe That He’s Not a Head Coach of a Team Right Now…

San Francisco, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, renowned for his offensive acumen, sought to enhance his coaching staff by adding legendary defensive coach Bill Belichick. Shanahan shared on “The TK Show Podcast,” hosted by Athletic columnist Tim Kawakami, that he extended a job offer to Belichick following his departure from the New England Patriots this offseason.

Shanahan recounted his outreach to Belichick, expressing his admiration for the coach’s enduring passion for football. “I did. I threw it out to him,” Shanahan said. “He loves football so much that you never know what he … I can’t believe that he’s not a head coach of a team right now. I know what I would do if I was an owner, so that shocks me, and the last thing you want to do is insult someone like Bill Belichick. But I know he just loves ball in the simplest form, so I threw it all out to him, whatever he wanted to do like whatever he would want to do.”

Belichick, who departed the Patriots after a storied tenure, had interviewed for a head coaching position with the Atlanta Falcons. The job ultimately went to Raheem Morris. Without further head coaching opportunities, Belichick has opted to work as a television analyst for the upcoming season.

The 49ers’ search for a new defensive coordinator followed the dismissal of Steve Wilks. Shanahan revealed that he offered the defensive coordinator position to Belichick before promoting Nick Sorensen to the role. “I was like, ‘Would you be interested?'” Shanahan recalled asking Belichick. “And he was very nice and appreciative, but he politely turned me down.”

Belichick’s impressive career record of 333-178, including playoff games, positions him just 14 victories short of surpassing Don Shula on the NFL’s all-time career wins list. The former head coach of the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots boasts a record six Super Bowl championships with Tom Brady as quarterback, alongside his contributions as the defensive coordinator for two Super Bowl-winning teams with the New York Giants.

Notably, one of Belichick’s championships came at Shanahan’s expense. The Patriots famously rallied from a 28-3 deficit in the Super Bowl following the 2016 season to secure a 34-28 overtime victory against the Atlanta Falcons, where Shanahan served as offensive coordinator.

Despite the missed opportunity to collaborate, Shanahan’s attempt to recruit Belichick underscores his commitment to assembling a top-tier coaching staff. While Belichick’s decision to decline may have been a disappointment, it also reflects the high regard in which Shanahan holds the veteran coach.

The episode highlights the respect and admiration between two of the NFL’s most respected coaching figures. Shanahan’s willingness to bring Belichick on board, even in a role of his choosing, speaks volumes about his recognition of Belichick’s football intellect and legacy. As Shanahan continues to steer the 49ers towards success, the pursuit of excellence remains evident in his strategic decisions and efforts to fortify his coaching team with the best minds in football.

Belichick’s future endeavors as a television analyst will undoubtedly offer fans a unique perspective on the game, drawing from his extensive experience and knowledge. Meanwhile, Shanahan and the 49ers move forward with the hope that their restructured coaching staff will drive the team to new heights in the upcoming season.
