The Toronto Maple Leafs’ top defenseman, Morgan Rielly, could be on the verge of a standout season, thanks to the addition of Chris Tanev.
On July 1st, the Leafs signed Chris Tanev, a move that might significantly benefit Rielly. Ideally, Tanev’s presence could elevate Rielly’s performance to unprecedented levels, propelling the team to new heights of success.
Tanev is highly regarded for his defensive skills and puck-moving abilities. This combination could be the perfect complement to Rielly, who has often had less effective partners throughout his career. Despite being a consistently excellent player, Rielly has been paired with less reliable defensemen, except for a brief period with TJ Brodie.
In the 2018-19 season, Rielly reached a career high with 20 goals and 72 points in 82 games while playing alongside Ron Hainsey. That season, he was a strong contender for the Norris Trophy, although he did not win it. Rielly’s best Expected Goals Rating came during the dominant 2020 season when the Leafs played exclusively against Canadian teams.
With Tanev by his side, Rielly could have his best season yet. Tanev’s defensive prowess should allow Rielly to focus on his strengths, such as moving the puck up the ice to key players like Auston Matthews. Head coach Craig Berube will have the advantage of pairing Rielly and Tanev against top lines without worrying about matchups, potentially leading to more favorable outcomes.
As long as the 34-year-old Tanev stays healthy and maintains his level of play, Rielly might achieve new career highs and record the best peripheral numbers of his career this season.
