CRITICISM: Penguins “The Next One” lambasts ESPN’s Ranking System…

Earlier this week, ESPN published an article ranking the top 100 athletes of the 21st century. This list spans various sports, including baseball, football, basketball, hockey, tennis, soccer, and more. Celebrating athletes from over two decades is a significant achievement. However, the list highlighted the ongoing lack of recognition for hockey, with only three players featured: Sidney Crosby (22nd), Alex Ovechkin (54th), and Connor McDavid (98th). Notable omissions include stars like Nathan MacKinnon, Patrick Kane, and Martin Brodeur. Basketball dominated the list with 24 players, seven more than baseball.

Despite being a major sport in Canada and the USA, known for its tough playoffs, hockey was one of the least represented sports. It had fewer athletes on the list than boxing, golf, and tennis, and the same number as track & field and auto racing. Hockey enthusiasts argue it deserved more representation than sports like swimming, gymnastics, MMA, skiing, snowboarding, and cricket.

Sidney Crosby’s inclusion at 22nd highlights his enduring legacy. With three Stanley Cups, multiple awards including the Art Ross Trophy and Hart Memorial Trophy, and a pivotal 2010 Olympic gold medal goal, Crosby’s achievements are unparalleled. He has captained the Pittsburgh Penguins for 17 years, leading them to consistent playoff appearances and multiple championships.

In the past season, Crosby reached two significant milestones in a game against the Detroit Red Wings: his 1,000th career assist and 10th place in all-time points. At 36, entering his 20th season, Crosby continues to play at an elite level, having scored 94 points last season.

Crosby is also on the verge of another record, being just 189 faceoff wins behind Patrice Bergeron for the all-time lead. Assuming he stays healthy, he is likely to break this record in the 2024-25 season, adding another accolade to his illustrious career.

Beyond his on-ice skills, Crosby is known for his leadership and mentorship. Teammate Kris Letang recalled Crosby’s prediction and execution of a game-winning goal in the 2016 Stanley Cup final. Former linemate Conor Sheary also remembered Crosby’s encouragement, which boosted his confidence significantly.

Crosby’s accomplishments in the 21st century make him the most distinguished NHL player of his time, earning him the 22nd spot on ESPN’s top-100 athletes list.
