Linda Purl and Patrick Duffy discovered love unexpectedly.
Duffy was married to ballet dancer Carlyn Rosser from 1974 until her passing in 2017. After her death, Duffy didn’t think he would find love again until he reconnected with Linda Purl, an old friend.
Purl and Duffy had been casual friends but lost touch over the years. The COVID-19 pandemic brought them back together through a group text, which eventually led to direct communication between just the two of them.
Duffy shared with PEOPLE in November 2020 that he drove 20 hours to see Purl in person, and they haven’t been apart since. He believes his late wife would want him to move on and feels his relationship with Purl honors her wishes.
Duffy explained that when happiness is offered, it’s important to consider it and not let it pass by if it feels right. He expressed surprise at finding love again, especially with Purl.
Their story began in 2000 when they first met in London, introduced by actor Richard Thomas. They reconnected at a media convention where Purl went to see Linda Gray at the Dallas signing table, only to find Duffy instead.
Their romance developed over video calls during the pandemic. They transitioned from frequent texts to Zoom calls that lasted for hours every night. Duffy would read poems to Purl, and one night, he accidentally confessed his love during their goodbyes.
Purl and Duffy attribute their successful late-in-life romance to their shared career experiences and outlook on life. Both are parents to sons: Purl has Lucius Carey with her ex-husband Alexander Cary, and Duffy has sons Padraic Terrence and Conor.
Duffy mentioned that keeping up with Purl’s active lifestyle has been a joyful challenge. He has embraced aging and focuses on making the most of life.
The couple also started a sourdough starter company, Duffy’s Dough. Inspired by Duffy’s family recipe, they dehydrated the original starter to create a business together, combining their skills and enthusiasm.
Overall, Purl and Duffy’s relationship blossomed unexpectedly, proving that love can be found at any stage in life.
