Novak Djokovic’s season has been less than stellar, with no titles won and surprising losses to lower-ranked opponents. After suffering a knee injury at the French Open, he underwent surgery three weeks before Wimbledon. Despite his uncertain participation, Djokovic made a swift recovery and entered Wimbledon, where he advanced to the second week by defeating Holger Rune and Lorenzo Musetti. However, in the final, he was outplayed by Carlos Alcaraz, who dominated the match from start to finish, forcing Djokovic to delay his quest for an eighth Wimbledon title.

Djokovic’s defeat at Wimbledon raises questions about his future prospects in major tournaments. Vijay Amritraj noted that both Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have developed the belief that they can beat Djokovic, a significant shift in the competitive dynamic. The young players have learned from their initial matches against Djokovic and now avoid overexerting themselves, playing smarter and more patient tennis.

Djokovic has yet to secure a victory over a Top 10 player in 2024. He acknowledged the generational shift in tennis, recognizing Alcaraz and Sinner as the new front-runners, although he remains unfazed by opinions suggesting a desire for a new leader in tennis. Despite not winning titles this year, reaching the Wimbledon final shortly after knee surgery is a testament to Djokovic’s resilience. Andy Roddick praised Djokovic’s ability to reach the final despite his lack of fitness and match practice, highlighting Alcaraz’s strategic play that kept Djokovic off balance throughout the match.
