Coach Patrick Sang Shares Why He Wants Eliud Kipchoge to Win Third Olympic Marathon Title
Coach Patrick Sang has revealed the key reason he wants Eliud Kipchoge to win his third consecutive Olympic marathon title at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
If Kipchoge achieves this, he will become the only man to have won three Olympic marathon titles, earning him a place in history. However, Sang’s motivation goes beyond the historical significance; he wants Kipchoge to demonstrate that anything is possible. In an interview with Athletics Weekly, Sang explained that while the world will interpret the victory in various ways, for him, it will spark widespread conversation.
“My prayers are that he wins. When he wins, it will be interpreted in many ways. I remember the 1:59 challenge and its significant impact on school curriculums,” Sang said. “For me, the most important aspect is that we will see longevity and new possibilities. People who love sports and scientists alike will question whether it’s the mind or the body that makes such achievements possible.”
Kipchoge first claimed Olympic marathon gold at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games with a time of 2:08:44. He defended his title at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, winning in 2:08:38. As he heads to Paris, Kipchoge faces a tough field, having started his season with a 10th-place finish at the Tokyo Marathon. Nonetheless, he aims for a strong comeback.
