Three Underrated Players the Twins Should Target at the Trade Deadline
As the trade deadline approaches, the Minnesota Twins find themselves in the thick of the AL Central race. To bolster their chances, they should consider making some underrated moves. Currently trailing the Cleveland Guardians by eight games and holding onto a Wild Card spot, the Twins need to be strategic in their acquisitions to avoid overspending while increasing their chances of a deep playoff run.
Roster Improvement Needs
The Twins have struggled against right-handed pitchers this season, batting only .236 compared to .278 against left-handers. While they have strong offensive players like Carlos Correa and Royce Lewis, they need additional support to prevent opponents from working around these key players. Additionally, while Joe Ryan has been productive and Pablo López is showing signs of improvement, the rest of the pitching staff lacks consistency and playoff experience. Acquiring a veteran starter would provide the necessary stability.
1. Brent Rooker, OF, Oakland A’s
Rooker, a former Twin, has excelled with the Oakland A’s, hitting 30 home runs last season. This year, he’s batting .256/.333/.496 with 13 home runs and 44 RBIs. Notably, he’s hitting .262 with nine home runs against right-handers. On a one-year deal with a struggling team, Rooker would add much-needed power behind Lewis, making him a cost-effective option.
2. Brendan Rodgers, 2B, Colorado Rockies
Rodgers, a second baseman for the Rockies, could provide valuable infield depth. Currently slashing .279/.311/.403 with four home runs and 14 doubles, Rodgers is hitting .259 against right-handers and .353 in June. A change of scenery might help the 27-year-old former third overall draft pick reach his potential. Given his one-year deal and the Rockies’ poor performance, Rodgers could be an affordable rental.
3. Yusei Kikuchi, SP, Toronto Blue Jays
Kikuchi, a left-handed starter, would be a solid addition to the Twins’ rotation. With a 4-7 record, a 1.33 WHIP, and a 4.00 ERA, Kikuchi has made seven quality starts this season. His experience and reliability would provide a left-handed option for manager Rocco Baldelli. Kikuchi’s contract expires after the season, making him a practical, short-term addition.
These players may not be as high-profile as Pete Alonso or Jack Flaherty, but they are attainable and can make a significant impact. By targeting these underrated players, the Twins can enhance their roster and strengthen their bid for the AL Central title without sacrificing too much of their future.
