An Insider Reveals Jets’ Star is Major Target Bruins Pursue to Boost Youth and Talent Pool…

The NHL Draft starts on Friday, June 28, followed by the free-agent frenzy on Monday, July 1. Notable trades include Ryan McDonagh’s return to the Tampa Bay Lightning and the New Jersey Devils acquiring goaltender Jacob Markstrom. The Ottawa Senators are leading the Linus Ullmark sweepstakes. Meanwhile, the Boston Bruins should consider acquiring Rutger McGroarty from the Winnipeg Jets.

McGroarty, a 2022 draft pick, is reportedly unhappy in Winnipeg and has returned to the University of Michigan for his junior season. According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, a trade involving McGroarty is likely. If available, Bruins GM Don Sweeney should seize the opportunity to bring him to Boston.

The Bruins’ core is strong, led by veterans Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak, and defensemen Charlie McAvoy, Brandon Carlo, and Hampus Lindholm. However, the team needs to inject youth and replenish its talent pool. Prospects like Mason Lohrei and Matthew Poitras have shown promise, but more young talent is necessary. McGroarty fits this need perfectly.

Selected 14th overall in 2022, McGroarty is a versatile forward who excels at both center and left wing. He has a lethal shot, excellent playmaking ability, and a high hockey IQ. His production has been impressive, with standout performances in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the U.S. National U18 Team, and the NCAA with the University of Michigan. In his freshman year at Michigan (2022-23), he scored 18 goals and 39 points. His sophomore year saw an increase in assists, tallying 18 goals and 36 assists.

McGroarty’s success extends to international play, being a point-per-game player in the World Junior Championships from 2021-2024. His consistent performance makes him a valuable target for the Bruins, though acquiring him will be challenging.

The Ducks’ trade for Cutter Gauthier indicates that acquiring McGroarty would require a significant offer, likely involving a draft pick and a young player. The Bruins, lacking early picks in the 2024 draft, would need to consider their 2025 first-round pick or a 2026 second-round pick. Alternatively, assets from a potential Ullmark trade could be used.

Adding McGroarty would bolster the Bruins’ prospect pool and provide a promising young talent for the lineup. With Jake DeBrusk’s future uncertain, McGroarty could be a productive winger behind Pastrnak, making him an ideal addition. Sweeney should explore this opportunity to strengthen the Bruins’ future.
