Breaking News: Washington General Manager Finally Identifies the ‘Perfect Fit’ for Capitals as 2024 Draft Target…

Washington Capitals’ 2024 Draft Target: Stian Solberg

Soon, Washington Capitals fans will discover who their team will select with the 17th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. If they opt for a defenseman, Adam Jiricek and Carter Yakemchuk are notable prospects. Another defenseman attracting considerable attention is Stian Solberg, who has honed his skills in the Vålerenga program over the past few seasons. He could be a strong pick if General Manager Brian MacLellan calls his name on June 28.

Rising Through Vålerenga’s Ranks

Born on December 29, 2005, in Oslo, Norway, Solberg, like fellow 2024 Draft hopeful Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, has spent multiple seasons with Vålerenga. He began with the U16 team in the 2019-20 season, amassing 20 points in 23 games. The following season, he split his time between the U16 and U18 teams, playing fewer games but still making an impact. In 2021-22, Solberg got his first chance to play for Vålerenga’s main roster in the EliteHockey Ligaen (EHL), also contributing to the U18 and U20 squads.

Solberg’s performance improved consistently over the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. He also played in the U20 Vålerenga club’s 2022-23 postseason and the EHL squad’s 2023-24 playoff run. For the 2024-25 season, Solberg will join Färjestad BK in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), a move that will test his ability to adapt to a new league.

Solberg’s Strengths

Solberg’s work ethic stands out. As noted by Peter Baracchini in his article “Stian Solberg – The NHL Draft Prospect Everyone Should Know About,” Solberg significantly boosted his draft stock with a strong second half of the season. His solid skating, offensive upside in transitional play, and defensive prowess, including gap control and physicality, have impressed scouts.

NHL.com’s Aaron Vickers highlighted Solberg’s physical game, noting his reputation for being tough to play against. Solberg’s teammate, Minnesota Wild forward Mats Zuccarello, praised his grit, skill, and confidence.

Tony Ferrari from The Hockey News also commended Solberg’s defensive capabilities and willingness to engage in offensive plays. Ferrari emphasized Solberg’s potential as a solid late first-round pick, noting his consistent development.

 Fit with the Capitals

The Capitals’ defense is poised for changes, with key players like John Carlson nearing the end of their careers. Solberg, with his physical style and defensive skills, could help fill future gaps. Currently, Rasmus Sandin is the only defenseman signed long-term, while other contracts will expire soon. Solberg could be a crucial addition, potentially setting the tone for Washington’s defense.

If the Capitals decide to draft a defenseman, Solberg is a strong candidate. His physicality and improving skill set make him a promising option to strengthen Washington’s blue line.
