Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer reported: Nets and Hornets Involved Discussion for Trade of Two Big Stars…

As NBA trade talks intensify ahead of the draft, examining past near-deals helps predict potential offseason moves. One notable discussion involved the Brooklyn Nets and Charlotte Hornets considering a trade between Ben Simmons and Miles Bridges before the February 8 trade deadline.

Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer reported that Charlotte had conversations with Brooklyn about a trade that would send Bridges to the Nets in exchange for Simmons. Despite these talks, Bridges stayed with the Hornets. His agent, Rich Paul, told ESPN’s Brian Windhorst that Bridges would exercise his veto power to block trades, ensuring his season’s completion with Charlotte.

Simmons, who signed a five-year, $177.2 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, has one season left on his deal, earning $40.3 million for 2024-25 before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2025. The former No. 1 overall pick played only 15 games in the 2023-24 season, averaging 6.1 points and 5.7 assists per game. His season was cut short by a nerve impingement in his lower back. With the team’s previous stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving gone, Brooklyn might consider keeping Simmons’ expiring contract for future trade leverage.

With Simmons’ contract ending next season, the Nets might have better luck in offseason trade discussions. His availability issues have complicated his trade value and future prospects with the team.

Bridges signed a one-year, $8 million contract with Charlotte in July 2023 and is set to become an unrestricted free agent. The Hornets hold his Bird rights, making it easier for them to re-sign him.

The Hornets need to build a strong supporting cast around Brandon Miller and LaMelo Ball. Miller’s promising rookie season suggests he could be a long-term contributor. Charlotte must determine if Bridges fits well within this core group.
