‘I told him no’: Why Scottie Scheffler Declined an Autograph at the Travelers Championship…

You likely know a lot about Scottie Scheffler, the World No. 1 golfer and two-time Masters champion who is dominating men’s golf this year. His Texan pride was clearly evident at the 2024 Travelers Championship, where he had an encounter with a fan from New England.

Although Scheffler was born in New Jersey, he was raised in Dallas, Texas, where he still resides. He is an avid supporter of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. Recently, the Mavericks were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in a 4-1 series during the NBA Finals, losing the decisive Game 5 on Monday night.

The Travelers Championship is held in Cromwell, Connecticut, which is part of the New England region and known for its Boston sports fans. A reporter, aware of the recent NBA Finals outcome, asked Scheffler if he had received any taunting from New England fans.

“You arrive in New England right after the Celtics beat the Mavs…” the reporter started, but was interrupted by Scheffler.

“Do I have to answer this question?” Scheffler interjected, prompting laughter.

Scheffler explained that he didn’t expect any teasing from other professional golfers, not even from Keegan Bradley, a Vermont native and the defending champion who is a dedicated Boston fan.

“Maybe Keegan, but probably not,” Scheffler said. “I wouldn’t really expect it from him.”

However, Scheffler’s disappointment over the Mavericks’ loss did surface during a practice round at TPC River Highlands. A fan requested Scheffler’s autograph on a Celtics hat. Typically generous with fans and autographs, Scheffler declined this particular request.

“I did get one fan today ask me to sign a Celtics hat, and I told him no,” Scheffler said, eliciting more laughter from the press tent. “But other than that, not much interaction.”

Scheffler then proceeded to shoot a five-under 65 on Thursday at the Travelers, placing him three shots behind the early leader, Tom Kim.

For Scottie Scheffler, it seems a bit of playful revenge can be quite the motivator.
