Breaking: Pirates Owner Bob Nutting Discusses Officially Deadline Outlook…

Pirates Owner Bob Nutting Eyes Playoff Push

The National League’s race for the final two Wild Card spots is heating up, with the Pittsburgh Pirates among eight teams within two games of each other. Despite their 36-39 record, Pirates owner Bob Nutting believes they can contend for the playoffs.

Nutting acknowledged the team’s need for more offense, currently ranking fourth from the bottom with an 85 wRC+. He stated the club is assessing internal improvements and external acquisitions to boost their performance.

Contrary to recent trends of deadline deals, Nutting hinted at making moves earlier, stating they should be prepared to capitalize on opportunities as they arise. He emphasized GM Ben Cherington’s flexibility in exploring options and timing for strategic acquisitions.

Nutting reaffirmed a commitment to increase funds for baseball operations, noting the team’s payroll is already the highest since 2017. This follows a rebuild period that saw key players like Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole depart.

The Pirates boast a strong starting pitching lineup, with Paul Skenes and Jared Jones leading the rotation. Mitch Keller and Bailey Falter provide reliable mid-rotation support. Given their offensive struggles, the team is expected to prioritize acquiring offensive talent this summer.

Currently, only a few teams are clear sellers, including the White Sox, Rockies, Marlins, Angels, and A’s. Potential targets for the Pirates could include star center fielder Luis Robert Jr. from the White Sox or Brent Rooker from the A’s, both offering outfield improvements. Alternatively, first base options like Pete Alonso, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Josh Bell, or J.D. Davis could also be considered upgrades over Rowdy Tellez, who has underperformed with a 71 wRC+ in 61 games.

The Pirates are in a competitive position and are gearing up for a playoff push, with Nutting signaling a readiness to make strategic moves to bolster their chances.
