With NHL free agency just under six weeks away, this year’s market offers a mix of solid players, standout talents, and a few underrated individuals. Here are five pending unrestricted free agents who deserve more recognition.

1. Teuvo Teravainen, LW, Carolina Hurricanes

Teuvo Teravainen has been a reliable points producer for the Hurricanes since 2016, averaging 19 goals and 57 points per season when playing at least 60 games. Despite turning 30 next season, Teravainen had a career-high 17.6 shooting percentage and nine power-play goals in 2023. With the right team and coach, he could consistently hit 60 points per season.

2. Dakota Joshua, LW, Vancouver Canucks

Dakota Joshua is a classic agitator who makes his presence felt even when he’s not scoring. At 6-foot-3 and 206 pounds, he brings physicality and grit to the ice, making him valuable on a team’s second or third line. This spring, Joshua showcased his worth in the playoffs, scoring four goals and eight points, and delivering 74 hits in 13 games. He could be a great addition for teams seeking toughness and an edge in their lineup.

3. Matt Roy, D, Los Angeles Kings

Matt Roy is one of the top pure defensive players entering free agency. As a true stay-at-home defenseman, he excels in penalty killing, blocking shots, and effectively matching up against top lines. Though primarily defensive, Roy has also managed to score 21 or more points in the last three seasons. Teams needing a reliable right-handed shot for their top defensive pairings should consider Roy a potential steal.

4. Kevin Lankinen, G, Nashville Predators

Kevin Lankinen demonstrated his capability as a starting goaltender this season while backing up Juuse Saros in Nashville. Often starting the second game of back-to-backs against tough opponents, Lankinen achieved notable wins against top teams like the Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights, and Carolina Hurricanes.
