Breaking: Bears On RB Khalil Herbert Amid Roster Changes…

The Chicago Bears saw a shift in their backfield dynamics after allowing David Montgomery to leave in free agency last offseason. Khalil Herbert was initially expected to fill the starting role, but his situation for the 2024 roster now appears uncertain.

In 2022, Herbert showcased his potential, averaging 5.7 yards per carry. However, despite getting more carries in 2023, his efficiency dropped to 4.6 yards per attempt. Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Herbert needs a strong training camp to secure his place on the team.

Adam Jahns and Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic have highlighted that the 26-year-old could be on the roster bubble this summer. The Bears, active in seeking running back talent during free agency, have lessened Herbert’s chances of starting. D’Andre Swift, coming off a career year with the Eagles, joined the Bears on a three-year, $24 million deal and is expected to be the primary ball carrier.

The Bears also have veterans Khari Blasingame and Travis Homer, in addition to Herbert and Roschon Johnson, providing depth. Johnson, a fourth-round pick from last year’s draft, accumulated 561 scrimmage yards and played 40% of offensive snaps. His potential increased usage could reduce Herbert’s opportunities.

Herbert, a sixth-round pick, played a full rookie season but missed nine games over the last two seasons. In 2021, he averaged 24.1 yards per kick return but did not participate in special teams last season. His spot on the roster may depend on his special teams contributions, as noted by Jahns and Fishbain.

If the Bears decide to trade or release Herbert, his experience could make him an attractive depth option for other teams, though he would be a one-season addition. Should Swift remain healthy and maintain his lead role, Herbert’s market value in free agency might decline ahead of a potential move next spring.
