Breaking: Winnipeg Jets Added Assistant Coaches On to Arniel’s Staff…

The Winnipeg Jets have appointed Davis Payne and Dean Chynoweth as assistant coaches to support new head coach Scott Arniel for the 2024-25 season. They aim to help the Jets not only reach the playoffs but also avoid early exits. Arniel highlighted their experience with specialty teams and their ability to work with both veterans and young players.

Payne, 53, brings over 20 years of coaching experience, including a stint as head coach of the St. Louis Blues. He has also served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres, and Ottawa Senators. Before his NHL coaching career, Payne coached in the ECHL, leading the Alaska Aces to a Kelly Cup championship in 2006. He also played professionally, appearing in 22 NHL games for the Boston Bruins.

Chynoweth, 55, has coached at various levels and has executive experience as well. He spent the last three seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and previously worked with the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders. He also coached in the AHL and WHL, serving as head coach and general manager for the Swift Current Broncos. Chynoweth played 241 NHL games and is the son of Ed Chynoweth, a Hockey Hall of Fame builder.

The Jets’ decision to hire Payne and Chynoweth aims to address their subpar special teams. Payne will oversee the power play and forwards, while Chynoweth will manage the penalty kill and defensemen. Last season, the Jets excelled in five-on-five play but struggled with their power play and penalty kill, ranking 22nd and 21st in efficiency, respectively. The addition of Payne and Chynoweth is expected to provide fresh perspectives and improve these areas.

With the coaching staff now complete, attention turns to the 2024 NHL Entry Draft and free agency. The Jets have the 37th overall pick and several key players set to become free agents. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff will aim to strengthen the team through these opportunities.
