Winnipeg Jets Announce Additions to Arniel’s Coaching Staff…

The Winnipeg Jets have officially added Dean Chynoweth and Davis Payne as assistant coaches under head coach Scott Arniel. They will join existing assistant coaches Wade Flaherty and Marty Johnson.

Chynoweth is expected to manage the Jets’ penalty kill and defensive structure, while Payne will oversee the power play and forward strategy.

Chynoweth, 55, previously served as an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs for three seasons, focusing on the penalty kill, which ranked 8th in 2021-22, 12th in 2022-23, and 23rd in 2023-24.

He also coached the Carolina Hurricanes from 2018-2021 and the New York Islanders from 2009-2012. In Carolina, his penalty kill units ranked 8th, 4th, and 3rd. Before his NHL coaching career, Chynoweth held various roles in the IHL, WHL, and AHL.

As a player, Chynoweth was drafted 13th overall by the New York Islanders in the 1987 NHL Draft. He played 241 NHL games with the Islanders and Boston Bruins, recording 22 points and 667 penalty minutes.

Payne, 53, spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach for the Ottawa Senators. He has also worked with the Buffalo Sabres, Los Angeles Kings, and St. Louis Blues, winning a Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2013-14. Payne’s coaching career includes stints in the AHL and ECHL, where he won the Kelly Cup with the Alaska Aces in 2006.

Payne was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft and played 22 games for the Boston Bruins.

With the addition of Chynoweth and Payne, the Jets aim to revamp their penalty kill, power play, and defensive systems as they prepare for the 2024-25 season.
