How Arizona Basketball’s 4-Star Center Commit Emmanuel Stephen Fits into the 2024-25 Plan
Arizona’s incoming freshman class faces increased competition, but the Wildcats might have a future star in Emmanuel Stephen, reminiscent of Christian Koloko.
Arizona Basketball’s 2024 recruiting class has recently seen changes, with Joson Sanon and Jamari Phillips opting for ASU and Oregon. While we’ve discussed Carter Bryant’s potential role, four-star center Emmanuel Stephen deserves more attention, possibly overshadowed by his flashy teammate Phillips at Dream City Christian School.
Stephen, nearly 7 feet tall and weighing 215 pounds, mirrors the physical profile of Arizona alum Christian Koloko when he joined the Wildcats. With additional weight training, Stephen could become a significant force, potentially reaching Koloko’s 230-pound frame.
Depth Chart and Playing Time
Initially, Stephen might not see much action. Head coach Tommy Lloyd tends to favor transfers, with incoming Tennessee transfer Tobe Awaka likely to secure the backup center spot behind Motiejus Krivas, placing Stephen third in line.
While Awaka’s current size gives him an edge, Stephen’s height and wingspan provide a notable advantage. Should Krivas struggle to establish himself as the starter, Lloyd might adopt a “center by committee” strategy, giving Stephen a chance to claim a significant role.
Stephen’s Advantages
Stephen’s height, at 7 feet, is an unteachable asset. His length allows him to effectively disrupt shooting lanes, block shots, and deliver powerful dunks. These defensive strengths could earn him more playing time as the season progresses.
Lloyd has a track record of developing African-born centers like Cameroonian Koloko and Malian Oumar Ballo, both of whom thrived under his coaching. Given Stephen’s similar background, defensive potential, and youth, he is well-positioned to rise to the backup center spot by season’s end.
Expect Stephen to potentially become a key player for Arizona, offering the Wildcats a promising new talent.
