Breaking: Maple Leafs Confirms the Departure of Another Key Star.Insider Identifies Team to Watch for Mitch Marner Trade…

One of the major NHL offseason topics has been Mitch Marner’s future team for 2024. The 27-year-old forward has one year remaining on his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, with a cap hit of $10.93 million. Speculation suggests the Leafs might trade Marner to gain value before he becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer. On “Leafs Morning Take” Tuesday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman mentioned the Vegas Golden Knights as a potential dark-horse contender for Marner. “A lot of people think Vegas will be in the mix,” Friedman stated, noting Vegas’s reputation for pursuing top players. Possible trade discussions have included Shea Theodore and Logan Thompson.

The Golden Knights are known for significant trades, having acquired top players like Jack Eichel, Tomas Hertl, Mark Stone, and Noah Hanifin this way. A trade for Marner would likely involve some of Vegas’s top prospects, draft picks, and key roster players. For instance, a deal might include Shea Theodore or Logan Thompson, along with prospects such as Lukas Cormier, Brendan Brisson, Mathieu Cataford, Carl Lindbom, and draft picks including their 2024 first-rounder and a second-rounder in 2025 or 2026.

Toronto might also choose to extend Marner’s contract. Since his rookie season in 2016, Marner has scored 194 goals and accumulated 639 points, placing him 10th in NHL scoring during this period, making his next contract expensive. Toronto’s decision hinges on whether they are comfortable having four players with $11M or more annual salaries. “I think Marner’s first choice is to stay with the Leafs,” Friedman added, “but he understands there’s a chance Toronto may decide to move on from him next year.”
