Following another disappointing early exit from the Stanley Cup playoffs, this pattern has become routine. Despite an impressive 52-win regular season, the Jets were unable to perform when it counted, lacking the size, speed, and experience to compete with the 2022 champions, Colorado.
The Jets cannot afford to remain stagnant. Last season’s strategy of maintaining the status quo led to the same disappointing outcome. Cheveldayoff has already appointed Scott Arniel as the new head coach, replacing the retired Rick Bowness, marking the first of many crucial decisions ahead.

- Nikolaj Ehlers’ Future:
- Ehlers reportedly is hesitant to sign a long-term extension. His current contract has one year remaining, and there are ongoing discussions with Cheveldayoff. Arniel plans an analytics summit this summer, possibly to better utilize Ehlers’ talents, which have consistently shown top-line potential. If Ehlers isn’t integrated effectively, a trade might be necessary, though his durability and playoff performance are concerns. Potential trade partners include Boston, Seattle, Ottawa, Columbus, Carolina, and New Jersey.
- Free Agency Prospects:
- The Jets could trade Ehlers for a decent pick and make significant moves in free agency, targeting players like Brandon Montour, Brett Pesce, Brady Skjei, or Matt Roy to strengthen their blue line. They also aim to re-sign Dylan DeMelo and Sean Monahan, with an eye on top-six forward replacements if Ehlers is traded.
- Possible Buyouts:
- With cap space issues, a buyout of Nate Schmidt is a possibility, although costly. Neal Pionk might be traded to free up space, as he struggled last season.
