BREAKING: Justin Fields named one of best reinforcement QBs…

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a compelling quarterback situation in 2024. While it looks like Russell Wilson will start the year as QB1, there’s significant support for newcomer Justin Fields.

If Fields becomes the backup, it will be a major adjustment for him, having been the main guy for the Bears since being drafted in 2020. Without this year’s number one pick, he might still be their starter.

Nevertheless, Fields has joined Pittsburgh, and even if he doesn’t secure the starting role, he is considered one of the top backups in the league. Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated ranked him fifth among NFL backup quarterbacks for 2024.

“Fields might get a shot at the starting job, but it’s likely he will start training camp behind Wilson,” said Manzano. “If he takes the backup role, he’ll need to quickly adapt when called upon. Fields had consistency issues with the Bears but also had notable highs as a three-year starter, with 40 touchdowns, 30 interceptions, and a 60.3% completion rate over 38 games.”

Fifth place seems appropriate for Fields. He displayed significant potential in Chicago but also had struggles in a top-tier NFL offense. This isn’t a bad position for a backup. If Wilson gets injured, Fields would likely only be asked to maintain stability, not perform miracles.

Debates arise with other backups ranked ahead of Fields. Jake Browning of the Bengals, who filled in admirably for Joe Burrow, has a lower ceiling despite being a better backup. Gardner Minshew and Joe Flacco also rank higher, though Flacco’s potential to become elite is now highly unlikely.

Michael Penix Jr. is one name ranked ahead of Fields that could be contested, as he has yet to play an NFL game. While impressive in college, NFL experience is more reliable for now.

Overall, Fields is considered one of the top backup quarterbacks for 2024, crucial for a team strong on defense. The gap between Wilson and Fields is small, perhaps the smallest for any playoff-contending team. While relying on a backup isn’t ideal, Fields provides considerable confidence in that role.
