Ottawa Senators Legend Daniel Alfredsson Receives Honorary Doctorate from University of Ottawa

Former Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson was honored with an honorary doctorate by the University of Ottawa on Thursday.

“The Faculty of Health Sciences is delighted to present an honorary doctorate to Daniel Alfredsson. His dedication to promoting safe sport and mental health makes him a perfect recipient for this honor. Welcome to the FHS family, Captain Alfie,” the University announced on social media.

During Thursday’s convocation ceremony, Alfredsson spoke to the graduates.

“For every loss we suffer, a new opportunity will open. Just keep believing in yourself and try your best,” he advised the gathered students.

Alfredsson, who still holds numerous franchise records for the Ottawa Senators, will be returning to the team’s coaching staff next season.

However, the University of Ottawa emphasized his off-ice contributions to the community.

“Daniel Alfredsson became a Canadian citizen in 2016 and resides in Ottawa with his wife Bibbi and their four sons. In addition to his hockey achievements, he has significantly contributed off the ice. He recently received a Meritorious Service Cross from the Governor General of Canada for his involvement in the ‘You Know Who I Am’ mental health campaign, which aims to reduce the stigma around mental health,” the University stated.

“Daniel Alfredsson’s story is one of dedication, excellence, and service, and we are proud to celebrate his accomplishments with this honorary doctorate.”
