BREAKING: Paul Pierce is critical of the Lakers recent moves, particularly the hiring of JJ Redick as head coach and their interest in drafting Bronny James…

Paul Pierce isn’t impressed with the direction the Lakers are taking, especially with the potential hiring of JJ Redick as head coach and their interest in drafting Bronny James.

The Lakers are reportedly close to signing JJ Redick as their new head coach just weeks before the NBA Draft, where they might also consider drafting Bronny James. On ‘The Truth Lounge’, Pierce criticizes these moves, suggesting they prioritize entertainment over winning championships.

“I don’t even think it’s about winning a championship anymore. It’s about putting on a show. This feels scripted. Hiring JJ Redick and possibly drafting or signing Bronny—does this sound like a move toward a championship or just putting on a show?”

Although Pierce didn’t mention LeBron James directly, it’s clear that these decisions reflect some influence from LeBron, given his connections with Redick and his stated desire to play alongside his son, Bronny. With LeBron set to become a free agent this summer, the Lakers have a motive to keep him content so he re-signs with the team.

Reports claim that LeBron is not involved in the Lakers’ search for a new head coach, with the organization believing Redick could be the next Pat Riley. However, drafting Bronny seems like a more obvious attempt to please LeBron. Bronny has been declining workouts from other teams and focusing on joining either the Lakers or the Suns, suggesting a deliberate plan.

Impact on a Win-Now Lakers Roster
The Lakers are in a must-win situation, having invested heavily in their current roster. With frequent coaching changes and substantial financial commitments, their goal is clearly a championship. Anthony Davis’s contract extends beyond LeBron’s playing days, indicating a long-term winning strategy.

Drafting Bronny shouldn’t drastically change the team’s performance unless it results in poor lineups to give him playing time. If he’s drafted to develop his skills without affecting the main lineup, it shouldn’t hinder their winning chances.

Redick’s hire is more uncertain. He lacks coaching experience but has demonstrated strong game knowledge through his media work, including a podcast with LeBron analyzing the game. If Redick is more of an analyst than a coach, it could put the Lakers in a difficult position. Should things go wrong, LeBron might face significant blame, making it crucial for all involved to carefully consider these decisions and hope for the best outcomes.
