Denver Nuggets Eye $33 Million Former All-Star as NBA Free Agency Approaches

Following a disappointing conclusion to their title defense, the Denver Nuggets are gearing up for an offseason overhaul. Nikola Jokic and his team aim to reclaim the championship in the 2024-25 season, and it’s evident from their recent performance that they need to upgrade their roster to stay competitive.

One potential addition to the Nuggets is former All-Star Gordon Hayward, who will enter free agency as his current contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder expires.

Denver Nuggets News: Gordon Hayward as a Free Agency Prospect

The Thunder took on Hayward’s $33.3 million contract last season after acquiring him just before the February trade deadline. OKC general manager Sam Presti has admitted that trading for Hayward was a mistake, indicating that the team does not plan to offer him a contract extension this summer.

Hayward, a 6-foot-7 swingman, could be headed to Denver in what has been a varied 13-year NBA career. Nuggets reporter Harrison Wind from The DNVR shared that some within the Nuggets organization are fans of Hayward.

It’s uncertain what salary Hayward will command for his next contract, but it will likely be much less than the $33 million he earned last season. Given their limited cap space for 2024-25, the Nuggets hope to sign Hayward at a significant discount.

In the first half of the previous season with the Charlotte Hornets, Hayward averaged 14.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
