Report: Winnipeg Jets Head Coach Reflects on Lessons Learned Since Columbus Dismissal…

Scott Arniel, the newly appointed head coach of the Winnipeg Jets, reflects on the valuable lessons he’s learned since his dismissal from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Arniel believes that overcoming the most challenging period of his coaching career has prepared him to achieve greater success with the Winnipeg Jets.

Arniel, who was recently named the Jets’ head coach, was fired by the Columbus Blue Jackets 12 years ago.

“One of the toughest times in my coaching career, perhaps in my entire hockey career, was when I was fired in Columbus,” Arniel revealed during a media event at Canada Life Centre. “It took a long time to move past it. I dealt with a lot of anger and doubt, and it really affected my mood.”

At 61, Arniel doubted he’d ever get another opportunity. “For 12 years, I’ve wondered if I’d get a second chance,” he confessed.

“Many great coaches in our league have had second and even third chances and have thrived. I believe the lessons I’ve learned over the years will help me progress.”

Previously an associate coach with the Jets for the past two seasons, Arniel replaces the retired Rick Bowness.

Arniel’s journey has come full circle since being drafted by the Jets in 1981, playing for the team for five years, and now returning as head coach.

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff felt Arniel was the right choice after interviewing only two other candidates.

“He’s here today because he’s earned it,” Cheveldayoff said, commending Arniel’s communication with players and his ability to manage the team under pressure. “We’re building on a solid foundation.”
