JUST IN: In Game 5 against the Stars, the Edmonton Oilers faced the delicate task of managing playoff pressure while maintaining a sense of urgency on the ice…

The ongoing National Hockey League playoffs signify the farthest advancement the Edmonton Oilers have made in a generation. For many players on the team, including their longest-serving member, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, this territory is unfamiliar. Nugent-Hopkins was just 13 years old and several years away from being drafted first overall when the Oilers last reached this stage, defeating the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the fifth game of the Western Conference Final eighteen years ago.

However, not all players are novices to this level of competition. Six players on the team, namely Cody Ceci, Mattias Ekholm, Adam Henrique, Mattias Janmark, Evander Kane, and Corey Perry, have previously reached the final-four stage with other teams, with Perry having even won the Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007, having played against the Oilers in the 2006 conference final as a rookie.

While the players now face heightened pressure due to their unprecedented progress, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch emphasized the importance of instilling confidence and maintaining composure. Knoblauch stressed the need for the team to stick to their game plan and support each other rather than succumbing to additional pressure to perform.

Ekholm, a seasoned defenseman who experienced a Cup final with the Nashville Predators in 2018, highlighted the significance of recognizing the opportunity presented in the playoffs to manage stress effectively.

Nugent-Hopkins, a veteran of 13 years, advocated for playing with urgency while maintaining control, asserting that collective effort and cohesion are crucial for the team’s success.

Heading into the game, star center Leon Draisaitl expressed confidence in the team’s abilities, believing that their best performance can outshine any opponent. However, he acknowledged the challenge of consistently maintaining peak performance but expressed optimism about the team’s progress and determination to continue their winning momentum.
