Breaking: Three Key Takeaways from Vikings OTA as Aaron Jones and Shaq Griffin Face Off…

Three Takeaways: Aaron Jones and Shaq Griffin Clash at Catch Point

The Minnesota Vikings held their fifth Organized Team Activity (OTA) practice on Wednesday, which was the second session open to the media. The players, donning helmets but no pads, participated in individual position drills, 7-on-7 passing drills, and 11-on-11 reps.

Taking advantage of a beautiful day, the Vikings utilized two practice fields. The first-team offense and defense competed on one field, while the developmental squads faced off on the other.

Here are three key observations from the practice, sponsored by Minnesota Eye Consultants, the Vikings’ LASIK partner:

1. Brief Encounter in Minnesota

Among the numerous free agents signed, Aaron Jones and Shaq Griffin quickly made their presence felt on Wednesday. Jones, a former Packers running back, saw a pass coming his way from the backfield, only for it to be skillfully deflected by veteran cornerback Griffin. Despite the setback, Jones rebounded with several catches across the field. Quarterback Sam Darnold also connected well with Jones and completed a notable pass to Brandon Powell.

Rookie J.J. McCarthy impressed during his 7-on-7 reps, delivering a deep sideline pass to Thayer Thomas and quick strikes to Jordan Addison and Jalen Nailor in the red zone. When the team split into groups, McCarthy and Jaren Hall moved to the developmental field, while Nick Mullens and Darnold remained with the first team.

 2. Offensive Line Configuration

This week’s practice featured a shift in the offensive line. Instead of Blake Brandel, veteran newcomer Dan Feeney played left guard, positioned between left tackle Christian Darrisaw and center Garrett Bradbury. The right side remained consistent with Ed Ingram at right guard and Brian O’Neill at right tackle. Veteran tackle David Quessenberry also took some reps at left tackle with the first team.

3. Defensive Highlights

The Vikings’ defense showcased solid performance during the 7-on-7 passing drills. Linebackers Ivan Pace, Jr., a second-year pro, and newcomer Kamu Grugier-Hill effectively patrolled the middle of the field. Cornerbacks Jaylin Williams and A.J. Green III each broke up passes on consecutive plays, demonstrating strong coverage and contributing to a commendable defensive showing.
