BREAKING: Jake Brendel’s injury could indeed shuffle the deck for the San Francisco 49ers offensive line during (OTAs)…

The San Francisco 49ers encountered an unfortunate setback at the onset of organized team activities (OTAs) when head coach Kyle Shanahan disclosed that center Jake Brendel would be sidelined for the entire phase due to knee arthritis.

In response, the 49ers have made adjustments to their offensive line lineup for OTAs. Jon Feliciano has shifted to center while Spencer Burford assumes the right guard position.

Brendel’s absence is significant, considering the pivotal role of the center in the 49ers’ offense. However, it provides an opportunity for the team to explore alternative player combinations, offering insight into potential line configurations should injuries arise during the season.

Feliciano, a seasoned player with experience at guard and center, now competes at center, fostering competition at right guard.

While Brendel is expected to reclaim his center role upon recovery, the 49ers now have the flexibility to consider Feliciano at center should the need arise, having tested the arrangement during OTAs.

Spencer Burford started on Day 1, with rookie Dominick Puni, a third-round pick, also getting reps at right guard with the second-team offense. Puni could earn first-team opportunities if he adapts swiftly during OTAs.

The focus for San Francisco this offseason is fielding their best offensive line. The competition and the newfound flexibility with Feliciano at center allow thorough evaluation of guard options to determine the optimal lineup for 2024.

Shanahan assured that Brendel’s injury isn’t a cause for immediate concern, anticipating his return by training camp, suggesting he could play through it if necessary.

Among the backups, Nick Zakelj, a 2022 sixth-rounder, begins OTAs as the backup center, while undrafted free agent Drake Nugent serves as the third-string center. Both face a crucial offseason, with Zakelj needing to demonstrate improvement to secure a roster spot, and Nugent aiming to showcase his abilities against San Francisco’s deep defensive line.
