Should the Toronto Maple Leafs Pursue Jake DeBrusk in Free Agency?
Less than a month after being eliminated from the NHL Playoffs by the Boston Bruins, the Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly discussing off-season moves with their rivals. Both teams are determined to make significant changes in pursuit of a Stanley Cup Final appearance.
There is speculation that the Maple Leafs are interested in pending free agent Jake DeBrusk and Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark, who has one year remaining on his contract. However, this interest is not surprising, as many NHL teams would be keen on these players if they become available.
While DeBrusk and Ullmark are appealing, their acquisition could have considerable financial consequences. The Leafs must weigh these risks carefully, especially given their defensive struggles last season.
**Toronto Maple Leafs Should Avoid Jake DeBrusk in Free Agency**
Jake DeBrusk is undeniably a talented player, evident from his 11 points in 11 games against the Leafs this season and his 11 points in 13 playoff games for the Bruins. Despite his preference to remain with the Bruins, DeBrusk is set to become an unrestricted free agent after completing his two-year, $8 million contract.
DeBrusk’s combination of strong playoff performances and solid regular-season stats makes him a highly sought-after free agent. Despite only scoring 40 points, he ranked among the top 13 percent of forwards in offensive wins above replacement (WAR). His relatively low point total is attributed to bad luck, as he was among the bottom 21 percent in finishing and primary assists but excelled in shot contributions, primary shot assists, and high-danger passes.
DeBrusk is also known for his physicality, defensive skills, and penalty-killing abilities. These attributes would make him a valuable addition to any championship-contending team, leading to a competitive market for his services. Although he would be an upgrade over Max Domi or Tyler Bertuzzi, DeBrusk is 27 and likely to demand a long, expensive contract. A seven-year deal at $6 million annually may not be the best use of resources for the Leafs.
**The Maple Leafs Need a Goalie, But Not Linus Ullmark**
Linus Ullmark is an excellent goaltender, but his performance might be less impressive outside the Bruins’ historically strong team. While Ullmark has top-10 NHL stats and won the Vezina Trophy in 2023, his playoff record is less convincing, with a 3.80 goals-against average and a .880 save percentage over three playoff runs (10 starts).
Ullmark’s tandem role and inconsistent playoff performance make his $5 million price tag risky for the Leafs, despite their urgent need for an elite goalie. Given the unpredictable nature of goalies in the NHL, Ullmark may not be the secure option Toronto needs.
