On May 13th, it was revealed that Val Nichushkin was placed in Stage 3 of the NHLPA and NHL’s Player Assistance Program. This resulted in his suspension without pay for at least six months, with the possibility of applying for reinstatement afterward.
The news surprised the Colorado Avalanche before Game 4, raising numerous questions about the Player Assistance Program. Nichushkin entered the program on January 15th, 2024, was cleared to practice on February 26th, and moved into the follow-up care phase, which involves ongoing care under the program’s guidelines.
Jonathan Weatherley, NHLPA’s Senior Director of Communications, stated that there was no one available for interviews, leaving many questions unanswered about the Avalanche’s potential next steps. However, he provided some information about the program.
The Player Assistance Program, established around 1996, was previously known as the Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health program. It is jointly funded and administered by the NHL and NHLPA. The program extends support to family members and retired players for up to five years post-retirement.
The program’s daily operations are managed by two administrators: Dr. Joel Gold, appointed by the NHLPA, and Dr. Dave Lewis, appointed by the NHL. Dr. Gold, a consulting psychiatrist to the NHLPA, has held significant roles at Bellevue Hospital. , certified in Addiction Medicine and by the American Association of Medical Review Officers, is the Founder and Co-Director for the substance abuse programs of the NBA, MLS, and NHL.
The Player Assistance Program offers support to players facing issues related to substance abuse, addiction, mental health, gambling, and family matters. Players seeking help can consult with program administrators, who may then refer them to appropriate counselors, medical professionals, or other treatment providers.
