Jerod Mayo Explains Retaining Bill Belichick’s Son on Patriots Coaching Staff…

Brian Belichick’s decision to remain with the New England Patriots coaching staff, despite his father and brother leaving, was a choice few would have questioned had he decided to follow them. Bill Belichick is taking a year off, possibly eyeing a 2025 return, while Steve Belichick has taken the defensive coordinator position at the University of Washington. Nonetheless, Brian chose to stay and coach the Patriots safeties under new head coach Jerod Mayo, a move Mayo fully supports.

“[He’s a] true professional,” Mayo remarked to reporters. “It would be natural to follow your family, but he’s a New Englander and a Patriot through and through. I’m glad he stayed. Defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington is also pleased to have him on board.”

Brian has collaborated closely with Mayo, having been part of Bill Belichick’s defensive staff as linebackers coach. Covington, who started as the Patriots’ outside linebackers coach in 2019 and then became the defensive line coach in 2020, was promoted to defensive coordinator this year.

Brian Belichick has coached the Patriots safeties since 2020, starting his coaching career in New England as a scouting assistant in 2016 before moving up to coaching assistant from 2017 to 2019, and then to safeties coach in 2020.

“I think he is a great coach and has room to grow,” Mayo added. “He has embraced his role and focused on his development. So, I’m excited to have him.”

Under Brian’s leadership, the Patriots safeties have excelled. Since 2020, New England has been the only team with at least 70 interceptions, has allowed the third-lowest passer rating (83.2), the fifth-lowest yards per attempt (6.8), and the fifth-fewest touchdown passes (90), according to CBS Sports.
