REPORT: Why Red Wings GM Remains Uncertain in Deciding Ville Husso’s Future Amid Goaltending Crisis…

**Detroit Red Wings: Ville Husso’s Future Amid Goaltending Challenges**

Ville Husso’s time with the Detroit Red Wings has become a focal point as the team plans for future enhancements. Initially brought in to bring stability to the goaltending position, Husso faced significant hurdles this past season that have impacted both his performance and his future with the team. Throughout the season, his efforts to return to form were hampered by persistent injuries, notably not finishing any game after December 16 due to recurring lower-body issues first sustained against the Anaheim Ducks.

Despite attempts to return, Husso struggled, including re-injuring himself just 8:48 into a game against the Edmonton Oilers. His season was marked by a disappointing .892 save percentage and a 3.55 goals-against average, placing him low in league goaltending rankings.

**Red Wings’ Overall Goaltending Struggles**

The Red Wings’ goaltending problems extended beyond Husso. None of the team’s goalies, including Alex Lyon and James Reimer, ranked in the top 50 for GAA or save percentage in the NHL, indicating a larger issue within the team. General Manager Steve Yzerman stressed the need for comprehensive improvements, noting that all team segments, from goalies to forwards, must enhance their defensive efforts to better protect the net.

Trading Husso, if feasible, would only create another issue as the team would need to add two NHL-capable goalies in a market that’s particularly thin this summer.

“The goaltending position is interesting right now,” Yzerman said. “Every team is looking for a goaltender, whether it’s a starter, backup, or even a third option. Most teams need three goalies.”

“It’s my job to look for ways to improve our team in any position,” he added.

**The Future for Ville Husso**

As the off-season approaches, Husso’s future with the Red Wings remains uncertain, with one year left on his contract at a $4.75 million AAV. A trade is possible but complicated by his injury history and recent performance. Additionally, the thin market for goaltenders presents further challenges for Detroit if they decide to trade Husso and seek replacements.

Yzerman hinted at exploring the goalie market actively, aiming to improve the team through potential strategic acquisitions. Internally, prospects like Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine are considered not yet ready for regular NHL duties.
