Scotland winger Sean Maitland, renowned for his prowess on the field, will be hanging up his boots at the close of this season, concluding a remarkable career that has seen him shine both in club and international rugby.

At 35 years old, Maitland has earned 53 caps for Scotland, showcasing his talent in notable tournaments like the Rugby World Cups of 2015 and 2019, where he played a pivotal role in guiding Scotland to the quarter-finals in the former. Originating from New Zealand, Maitland’s connection to Scotland stems from his Glaswegian grandparents, who migrated to New Zealand in the 1960s. Despite representing New Zealand at the under-19 and under-20 levels, as well as donning the Maori All Blacks jersey, Maitland eventually transitioned to the northern hemisphere to pursue his rugby career.

His journey in professional rugby began with Glasgow Warriors in 2012, marking the start of a fruitful tenure. Notably, his Scotland debut occurred in 2013 against England at Twickenham, a match in which he showcased his scoring ability with a try, despite the team facing a defeat of 38-18. Furthermore, Maitland’s excellence on the field earned him a call-up to the British and Irish Lions squad for their successful tour of Australia in 2013.

Transitioning between clubs, Maitland’s impact remained unwavering. His stint with London Irish was followed by a move to Saracens in 2016, where he enjoyed an illustrious eight seasons. During his time with Saracens, Maitland amassed an impressive collection of accolades, including three Premiership titles in 2018, 2019, and 2023. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Saracens’ triumphant campaign in the European Champions Cup in 2019, where his try in the final against Leinster further solidified his legacy as a formidable winger.
