‘Incredibly early’ – Key Portsmouth figure makes admission over imminent transfer business

Portsmouth’s sporting director, Rich Hughes, has acknowledged that while recruitment efforts are underway, it’s still very early in the process, suggesting that this month will likely be quiet on the transfer front. With Portsmouth gearing up for Championship football after their promotion, new signings are deemed necessary to navigate the step up from League One. Despite some players departing due to expired contracts and loan deals ending, Portsmouth has had a clear plan in place for some time now.

Hughes mentioned that recruitment started promptly after promotion confirmation, with conversations and explorations ongoing. However, due to other leagues still in progress and decisions pending on players’ futures elsewhere, significant transfer activities before the end of May seem unlikely.

Although final decisions on potential signings can’t be made yet, Portsmouth can adopt a proactive stance in their summer recruitment, possibly reaching verbal agreements with targets. This proactive approach proved successful last summer, affording ample time for the manager and players to settle in.

Reports suggest Portsmouth might make up to 12 signings this summer, indicating a significant overhaul of the squad. While a meticulous and swift recruitment strategy will be crucial, the ongoing seasons for other clubs suggest a quiet May in terms of transfers. However, come June, as seasons conclude, Portsmouth aims to be among the early movers in the transfer market.
