Breaking: Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon step up in Game 5 victory Forcing Game 6…

The Colorado Avalanche faced a do-or-die situation in Game 5 of the second-round playoffs against the Dallas Stars. After a dismal performance in the previous game, significant improvements were necessary. The top-six forwards needed to elevate their play, and the defense had to tighten up to support goaltender Alexandar Georgiev. The Avalanche emerged victorious with a 5–3 win, showing marked improvement.

Cale Makar was a standout, scoring two goals in over 26 minutes of ice time. Prior to this game, Makar had only three goals in nine playoff games, with the Stars effectively neutralizing him since Game 1. However, he appeared more comfortable, effectively handling the puck and navigating the ice.

Nathan MacKinnon, who had openly criticized his own performance in Game 4, turned things around significantly. Previously held pointless with a minus-three rating, MacKinnon was more aggressive, frequently carrying the puck through the neutral zone and making multiple attempts on goal. He finished the game with a goal, an assist, and a plus-one rating.

Special teams were crucial for the Avalanche. After failing to score on their last eight power-play opportunities, they converted twice out of three chances in this game. A high-sticking penalty on Chris Tanev against Mikko Rantanen proved pivotal, as Makar scored his second goal during the ensuing power play. The penalty kill unit was also effective, successfully defending three out of four Dallas power plays.

This performance was a stark contrast to Game 4. The Avalanche played with more aggression and speed, suggesting they had mentally moved past the Valeri Nichushkin issue that had affected them previously. If they maintain this level of play in Game 6, the Dallas Stars will need to be on high alert.
