Breaking: Twins Criticized for making a mistake not re-signing Michael A. Taylor…

The Minnesota Twins faced a disappointing offseason with payroll cuts following a modest postseason run. Fans hoped for a strengthened roster but instead saw a frugal approach resulting in some questionable decisions, notably the failure to re-sign outfielder Michael A. Taylor, who had a stellar season last year.

Acquired from Kansas City to provide cover for Byron Buxton and form a strong defensive duo in centerfield, Taylor became the everyday centerfielder due to Buxton’s injuries, excelling in the role. Despite his success, the Twins let him go to free agency, where he eventually signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates, making the Twins regret their decision.

Taylor’s performance in Pittsburgh has been outstanding, emphasizing the mistake the Twins made. While fans are happy for his success, it’s hard not to compare it with the struggles of the player Minnesota chose instead. The Twins traded for Manuel Margot late in the offseason, expecting offensive contributions, but Taylor’s availability as a reliable backup for Buxton made more sense.

Currently, Taylor is outperforming Margot both offensively and defensively. Margot’s offensive stats are significantly lower, and he has struggled defensively, unlike Taylor, who impressed fans with his fielding skills last season, especially during the AL Wild Card Game with a game-saving catch.

Despite Margot offering more power, Taylor had a solid season in 2023 with career-high home runs and RBI, along with a strong OPS+. Margot and Taylor are earning the same salary, but Taylor was expected to command a higher salary, making the decision to let him go even more puzzling.

The Twins’ decision to prioritize Margot over Taylor, despite their similar salaries and Taylor’s proven track record, is viewed as a gamble that backfired. Fans appreciate Taylor’s contributions and wish he was still with the team, showcasing the missed opportunity for Minnesota to retain a valuable player while staying within budget.
