REPORT: New Zealand Rugby in Relentless Pursuit a First Five-eighth Player’s Early Return to All Blacks Squad…

New Zealand Rugby has confirmed ongoing discussions aimed at enticing Richie Mo’unga, the renowned All Blacks playmaker, to return early from his stint in Japan.

Mo’unga, who joined Toshiba Brave Lupus post the 2023 Rugby World Cup, remains a target for NZ Rugby and All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson, who are keen on bringing him back to New Zealand.

However, NZ Rugby’s current regulations dictate that overseas players, unless on officially sanctioned sabbaticals, cannot represent the national team. Mo’unga, contracted with the Japan Rugby League One side, would need to agree to a move back to New Zealand for a return to the All Blacks.

Chris Lendrum, NZR’s general manager of professional rugby, acknowledged the desire to have Mo’unga back and disclosed ongoing conversations with the player and his representatives. The goal is to secure Mo’unga on a full-time contract, aligning with his ambitions and NZ Rugby’s plans.

While Mo’unga’s current contractual obligations with Toshiba are recognized, both parties express interest in his return to bolster the All Blacks squad, although specific timelines are contingent on contractual negotiations.

Lendrum emphasized the importance of player commitment and willingness to play for the All Blacks, hinting at the unlikelihood of selecting offshore players for the national team. The focus remains on facilitating Mo’unga’s return within contractual parameters, demonstrating respect for his current employment while actively engaging in discussions to explore possibilities.
