The Winnipeg Jets are on the hunt for their fourth head coach in franchise history, following Rick Bowness’ retirement after two years with the team and a remarkable 38-year coaching career. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff emphasized that they aren’t looking to “replace” Bowness, given his unique qualities and contributions to the team’s foundation. Instead, they aim to find someone who can continue to build on that foundation and lead the team into a successful contention window.
One strong candidate for the job is current associate coach Scott Arniel. Arniel, 61, has shown his capability during his tenure, particularly when he stepped in for Bowness during a challenging period, guiding the team to a solid record. His previous head coaching experience with the Columbus Blue Jackets and his longstanding relationship with Winnipeg make him a natural choice.
Another contender is Dave Hakstol, 55, who most recently coached the Seattle Kraken. Despite being let go, Hakstol is known for his defensive coaching style and ability to connect with players, making him a potential fit for the Jets’ roster.
Jay Woodcroft, 45, had a short-lived stint with the Edmonton Oilers but demonstrated his coaching prowess by leading the team to the Western Conference Final in 2022. His playoff success and winning record with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors make him an intriguing option.
Gerard Gallant, 60, stands out as the most decorated candidate, with a Jack Adams Award and a history of success with teams like the Vegas Golden Knights and New York Rangers. His reputation as a player’s coach and his ability to develop young talent could benefit the Jets.
Lastly, Todd Nelson, 54, offers a fresh perspective, having achieved success in the AHL with teams like the Hershey Bears and Grand Rapids Griffins. Despite limited NHL head coaching experience, his track record in developing players and winning championships at the AHL level could make him a strong choice.
