As the 2024 NHL Draft approaches, it’s time for the debut mock draft of the season, focusing on the Detroit Red Wings’ potential picks. With eight selections in the upcoming draft, the Red Wings have ample opportunities to secure promising talents and potential steals. Through a mock draft simulation conducted by FC Hockey, promising prospects emerged in each round, setting the stage for Mock Draft 1.0.
The initial pick in the first round came as a surprise, as a standout defenseman, Carter Yakemchuk, was secured to bolster Detroit’s defensive lineup. Despite expectations that he would be off the board earlier, Yakemchuk’s skill set could provide significant assistance to the team’s defensive rotation in the near future.
In the second round, the Red Wings opted for Cole Beaudoin, a center known for his impressive size and productivity. While a winger with high scoring potential was desired, Beaudoin’s combination of scoring ability and physical presence made him an attractive choice.
The third round saw the acquisition of winger Carson Wetsch, adding depth and potential to the team’s forward lines. Despite his young age, Wetsch’s goal-scoring prowess showcased promising talent and room for development.

The sixth round selection, Jonas Taibel, offered additional depth as a versatile forward with potential for further development, despite needing to physically mature.
In the seventh round, Jan Spunar emerged as a potential prospect for the AHL level, following a standout season with the Portland Winterhawks, showcasing strong goaltending skills and potential for further growth.
Finally, Finn Harding was selected as a defenseman in the seventh round, despite lower productivity compared to other prospects. With time to refine his skills in Mississauga, Harding could develop into a valuable asset for the Red Wings in the future.
