An insider has disclosed the current status of contract negotiations involving Justin Jefferson, the Minnesota Vikings’ star wide receiver.
While the team has secured its quarterback, questions remain about JJ McCarthy’s role, whether he’ll immediately start or sit behind Sam Darnold initially.
However, the focus in the Twin Cities has shifted to Jefferson’s contract situation. Despite assurances from the front office that they intend to treat Jefferson fairly and have no plans to trade him, time is ticking.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport discussed this matter on the GoJo and Golic show, suggesting that Jefferson should be regarded not just as a wide receiver but as an exceptional player.
Rapoport wouldn’t be surprised if Jefferson aims to become the highest-paid non-quarterback player in the league.
He noted the Vikings’ urgency to strike a deal, facilitated by having a franchise quarterback on a rookie contract, which frees up funds.
Jefferson’s outstanding performance since joining the league, coupled with minimal injury setbacks, strengthens his case for a lucrative contract.
Given the current landscape of wide receiver salaries, the Vikings may need to make a significant financial commitment to retain him.
