Breaking: Red Wings General Manager Makes a ‘Scary Statement’ Regarding the Team Despite Progress…

Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman reflected on the team’s progress despite their late-season struggles and playoff absence for an eighth straight year, marking a franchise record.

Yzerman expressed overall optimism about the organization’s development, though he admitted disappointment with the season’s end, especially considering the thrilling final week.

Detroit showed improvement with 91 points, an 11-point jump from the previous season. Looking ahead to the 2024-25 season, Yzerman hinted at minimal roster changes, confirming the promotion of two AHL players—winger Jonatan Berggren and defenseman Albert Johansson—and the retention of promising prospect Simon Edvinsson.

Yzerman aims to retain unrestricted free agents Patrick Kane, David Perron, and Shayne Gostisbehere, although Kane’s departure seems likely. Priority contracts will focus on young talents Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond, both pivotal players in the team’s recent seasons.

Goaltending emerges as a concern, with Ville Husso and Alex Lyon currently under contract. Husso’s injury-plagued and inconsistent performance contrasts Lyon’s unexpected regular stint, albeit with revealed weaknesses over time. Free agent James Reimer’s return appears unlikely.

Coach Derek Lalonde is expected to continue, with emphasis placed on defensive improvement after conceding 274 goals, tying for 25th in the NHL. Yzerman stresses the need for defensive fundamentals and expects the coaching staff and players to address this aspect diligently.
