“A Stepping Stone for Red Wings” – 21 Year-old Swedish Defenseman Clears the Air Amid his Relationship with Red Wings’ Coach…

The Detroit Red Wings were impressed with how Simon Edvinsson, their young defenseman, performed under pressure during a close playoff run. Despite falling short, the 6’6″ former No. 6 pick showcased his abilities.

Now, he’s set to gain further experience in crucial playoff games with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL, following his reassignment alongside veteran forward Zach Aston-Reese.

Edvinsson, aged 21, saw action in 14 games since his recall on March 19. He took on a significant role, often paired with Jeff Petry, and maintained an average ice time of 18:46. Although he scored just one goal and had no assists, his performance was solid, with an even plus-minus rating and only two penalty minutes.

Coach Derek Lalonde praised Edvinsson’s contribution, highlighting his composure with the puck and commendable defensive play, especially in matchups against tough opponents like Toronto. Lalonde emphasized Edvinsson’s growth and adaptability throughout the season.

With three games left in the Griffins’ regular season, they’re gearing up to face Rockford in the opening round of the playoffs next week.

NHL star Patrick Kane also commended Edvinsson’s skills, noting his ability to control the puck and make smart plays, despite his imposing physical presence.

Edvinsson’s journey this season included a brief stint with the Red Wings in December. However, with the acquisition of experienced defensemen in the offseason, the organization opted to prioritize his development.

Starting the season with the Griffins, he played 52 games, showcasing his versatility and contributing offensively with eight goals and 21 assists.

Looking ahead, Edvinsson is poised to secure a spot on the Red Wings’ roster for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Aston-Reese, who briefly filled in for injured players in three games with the Red Wings, has been a consistent performer for the Griffins, tallying 14 goals and 15 assists in 59 games.
