Dillon Brooks Reveals Marc Gasol Called Him A ‘Fool’ His Entire Rookie Season And Never Said His Name…

Dillon Brooks shared during Marc Gasol’s jersey retirement ceremony that Gasol affectionately referred to him as a ‘fool’ throughout his rookie season without ever using his actual name.

Brooks humorously reminisced about this experience, acknowledging that Gasol’s playful ribbing actually helped toughen him up as a basketball player. Despite the initial teasing, Brooks expressed gratitude towards Gasol and congratulated him on the retirement of his No. 33 jersey with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Brooks’ revelation sheds light on their dynamic during Brooks’ early days with the team. While Brooks might have initially annoyed Gasol as a rookie, their relationship has evolved into one of mutual respect. Brooks, currently playing for the Houston Rockets, credits Gasol’s teasing as a formative experience that has helped him handle criticism and challenges in his career.

Arriving in Memphis as the 45th pick in the 2017 draft, Brooks found himself under Gasol’s wing, albeit with a unique form of mentorship. Unfortunately, their time together was cut short when Gasol was traded to the Toronto Raptors in February 2019, signaling the end of an era for the Grizzlies.

Gasol’s tenure with the Grizzlies spanned over a decade, during which he established himself as one of the franchise’s greatest players. A key figure in the “Grit and Grind” era alongside Zach Randolph and Mike Conley, Gasol’s contributions were instrumental in elevating the team’s status in the Western Conference. Despite falling short of an NBA championship, Gasol’s impact on the franchise was undeniable.

Statistically, Gasol’s achievements speak for themselves, as he holds numerous franchise records in rebounds, blocks, points, and games played. His accolades include three All-Star selections and the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year award. Gasol’s jersey retirement further cements his legacy as one of the Grizzlies’ all-time greats, joining Zach Randolph as only the second player to receive this honor.
