Louis Rees-Zammit is on the verge of joining the Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs, marking a significant step towards his NFL aspirations after leaving rugby earlier this year.
The 23-year-old caught the attention of NFL scouts after joining the NFL international player pathway (IPP), leading to contract discussions with several teams. However, Rees-Zammit looks set to sign a training deal with the Chiefs, with the final details expected to be finalized on Friday.
Rees-Zammit, who will likely join the Chiefs’ roster alongside stars like Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, aims to secure a spot as a running back or wide receiver for the upcoming NFL season.
Despite initial doubts about his transition to American football, Rees-Zammit’s impending signing with the Chiefs is viewed as a remarkable achievement. The Chiefs, known for their recent Super Bowl successes, will welcome Rees-Zammit to their summer camp, where he will compete for a spot in the 53-man roster for the 2024 season.
The training contract with the Chiefs is reportedly valued at £700,000, representing a significant milestone for Rees-Zammit as he works towards earning a full-time deal in the NFL. Despite his lack of previous American football experience, Rees-Zammit’s speed and power impressed during his time on the IPP.
In addition to his sports achievements, Rees-Zammit recently joined Roc Nation Sports, a sports agency founded by US rapper Jay-Z. The agency represents a host of athletes, including footballers Kevin de Bruyne, Vinicius Junior, and Gabriel Martinelli, as well as rugby stars like Siya Kolisi, Maro Itoje, and Marcus Smith.
