The Minnesota Twins have faced a significant challenge as they prepare for Opening Day, with several key relievers sidelined due to injuries. Jhoan Duran, Caleb Thielbar, and Justin Topa landed on the injured list last week, and the availability of Josh Staumont is also uncertain. This has left the Twins with multiple spots to fill in their bullpen.
Topa’s injury is particularly impactful, as he was a crucial part of the bullpen and helped soften the blow of Duran and Thielbar’s absences. With his absence, the Twins are now looking for bullpen reinforcements across all levels, a task they are addressing internally.
To address these injuries, the Twins have added three pitchers to their Opening Day roster. Jorge Alacá was already in contention, but injuries opened up opportunities for Cole Sands and Kody Funderburk as well. Another potential addition is Daniel Duarte, who is not on the 40-man roster but is being brought to Kansas City, indicating a possible activation in the early games of the season.
Sands’ inclusion is notable, as he was considered a long shot earlier in the spring due to the Twins’ impressive bullpen depth. However, his talent has earned him a spot on the roster. Alacá is also a compelling addition, as he has shown signs of a strong comeback from a difficult few seasons. Despite a 6.23 ERA in spring, he had a recent stretch with a 2.57 ERA, 12 strikeouts in ten innings, and promising velocity.
While Alacá’s potential is exciting, there is also caution due to past disappointments. However, if he performs well, he could become a crucial part of Minnesota’s bullpen. Overall, the Twins are facing bullpen challenges but are making moves to address them and are hoping for strong performances from their new additions.
