The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing critical lineup decisions as they prepare for the playoffs, with coach Sheldon Keefe seeking the right mix of forwards to support key scorers like Matthews, Marner, and Nylander. Despite this need, Keefe has shown reluctance to fully trust Nick Robertson, who has struggled to secure a regular spot in the lineup this season, shuttling between the AHL and NHL.
In 42 games, the 22-year-old Robertson has tallied nine goals and 11 assists, which may not seem impressive at first glance. However, when comparing his performance to players like Tyler Bertuzzi, Robertson has demonstrated strong 5v5 goal-scoring abilities, ranking fourth on the Leafs in goals per 60 minutes of ice time and fifth in points per 60. Additionally, his stint with the Marlies saw him notch five goals and six assists in nine games.
Despite his potential, Robertson has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with his current situation and was even considered a potential trade asset before the deadline. Keefe has limited Robertson’s ice time to just under 11 minutes per game, a similar level to players like Ryan Reaves, Bobby McMann, and Pontus Holmberg.
While Robertson may not be the most defensively reliable forward, statistics show he has performed reasonably well in his limited minutes, with a goals against per 60 minutes of 2.11 and a goals for per 60 of 2.97. However, Keefe’s cautious approach to Robertson’s playing time may hinder his development, especially considering the Leafs’ need for additional scoring options.
Despite concerns about his size and defensive capabilities, Robertson’s scoring ability could be crucial for the Leafs, particularly as they address scoring droughts that have plagued them in past playoff series. While the team’s focus is on immediate success, Robertson’s potential impact suggests he should be given a more significant role in the lineup to help the Leafs in their playoff push.
